Age verification
joyland-ai.io is restricted to adults aged 18 or over — or the legal age of majority in your jurisdiction, whichever is higher. This page explains what that means in practice, why the restriction exists, and how it interacts with Joyland AI's own age controls.
Two separate age gates
There are two age controls in play when you use this site and then go on to use Joyland AI:
- The gate on joyland-ai.io. A self-certification screen shown to new visitors. You confirm you are 18+; the acknowledgement is stored locally so it does not appear on every page load. This is a lightweight control appropriate for an editorial site that describes an 18+ product.
- The gate inside Joyland AI itself. A heavier control operated by the Joyland platform. Unlocking NSFW mode inside Joyland requires an ID-based verification step run by the platform's own systems. That is separate from anything this site does, and the record of that verification lives on the Joyland side.
Why the site is 18+
Joyland AI is an adult-permissible platform with an optional NSFW mode. Even in its SFW mode, the community-uploaded character library includes material and themes not appropriate for minors. Because the whole editorial focus of this site is the Joyland platform, the restriction on this site tracks the restriction on the product it covers.
Independent research reinforces the point. Common Sense Media's 2025 risk assessment of social AI companions — conducted with Stanford Medicine's Brainstorm Lab for Mental Health Innovation — rated the whole category "unacceptable risk" for anyone under 18. This site treats that finding as authoritative for the purpose of the age policy.
Self-certification: what it is and is not
The gate on entry to this site is a self-certification checkbox. Practically, that means you represent to us that you meet the age requirement, and we treat that representation as good faith. It is not the same as an ID-verified age check. It is proportionate to what joyland-ai.io actually does (publishes editorial text) and not proportionate to what it does not do (host any chat, image or user-generated content).
If you are misrepresenting your age to pass the gate, you are outside the scope of these terms and the site is not authorised for you. Please do not.
Parents and educators
If you administer a household or classroom device and want to restrict access to sites covering AI companion platforms, this site is a candidate for a domain block. Standard parental-control software, DNS-level filtering (such as OpenDNS FamilyShield or NextDNS), and browser-level content restrictions can all be used to enforce the block. Data implications of the age gate
The 18+ acknowledgement is stored in your browser's localStorage. It contains only a boolean value (that you acknowledged the gate) and no other personal data. Clearing site data or using a different browser resets it, at which point the gate appears again on next visit. Detail on data handling is on the privacy policy page.
Regional variation
Where local law imposes an age of majority higher than 18 for adult-permissible content — 21 in some US states, for instance — the higher figure applies to you. The gate on this site does not check jurisdiction; the responsibility to comply with local law rests with you.
